The Kills - 'God Games'

7/10

Throughout their earlier years, The Kills were seen as one of the more distinctive names doing the rounds. With a sound that blended grizzled guitars and blues melodies with an uncompromising gnarly production, they had a sound that not only blew you away but also left so many of their contemporaries in awe. But with external ambitions and projects pulling the duo apart in recent years, their output has been far scarcer this past decade. But just like that, they return with their long-awaited sixth studio album 'God Games', a record that sees them pick up almost exactly where they left off.

Much like what their previous offering 'Ash & Ice' showed us, The Kills seem more interested in pursuing new and interesting ideals rather than dredge up anything from their past. As a result, 'God Games' has this wonderfully fresh and passionate texture to it, honing more of that bluesy edge than ever before. Singer Alison Mosshart captivates throughout this new offering, and delivers one of the band's most alluring full-length to date.

They may not be the thunderous pairing they once emerged as, but this new era of The Kills is still packed with plenty of bold and exciting flavours. Branching their creative wings as far as they will go, 'God Games' has clearly been a labour of love during their seven-year absence.
