LUMER - 'Disappearing Act'

8/10

Since first forming a few years ago, Hull's LUMER have been riding the post-punk revival train, but have always been sure to keep their roots grounded in the traditional sound as much as possible. While they have obviously looked to keep their direction up-to-date and contemporary throughout their catalogue so far, there have been plenty of moments that sees them emulate their heroes in the scene as well. And this multifaceted intention is exactly what we get to experience on their debut EP 'Disappearing Act', a collection that sees them affirm their mark on the new music landscape.

While the band look to generate huge amounts of energy and fury within their music, it almost shows restraint through its production, which keeps the group in an almost muddy haze of distortion. So while bands like IDLES and Fontaines DC look to create a punk sound that pops and bangs at every turn, 'Disappearing Act' is much more humble in its approach, creating a denser atmosphere in the process. It almost feels like we are being treated to a lost recording from Gang Of Four or The Fall in places, given its rich and grizzled style that never seems to falter throughout.

In all, 'Disappearing Act' in one of those rare records that looks to appeal to new fans as much as older post-punk lovers. It has this confident and driven focus to it that takes an idea and runs with it as far as it will go, creating a distinctly cohesive release that delivers as much energy and excitement as it possibly can.
