OurGlassZoo - 'Horizons'

7/10

Over this past decade, Vancouver's OurGlassZoo have always looked to add a more anthemic edge to their commercially-inclined alt-rock sound. While very much in line with the mainstream approach to modern songwriting, the band's production has always sought a more euphoric and progressive direction, something that has already served them especially well on two LPs to date. And with their profile still continuing to grow in the international arena, they are back on the grind once again to release their eagerly-awaited third studio album 'Horizons', a record that sees them explore a more diverse identity this time around.

While the album's opener 'Shut Up' perfectly suits their guitar-driven aesthetic down to a tee, it doesn't take long before 'Horizons' begins to throw up a more enigmatic and eclectic style. Despite just seven tracks in length, the Canadian four-piece spend almost every song venturing down unfamiliar avenues in pursuit of something new and different to add to their dynamic catalogue. It's a journey that comes with ebbs and flows, but still gives this full-length a brilliantly succinct feel as it plays, something that many try but few succeed with.

It may be one of their more unpredictable efforts to date, but 'Horizons' still manages to pack plenty of punches as it moves along. While OurGlassZoo have always looked to maintain a fresh perspective for themselves, this new release comes across as their most experimental and adventurous LP yet.
