MGMT - 'Little Dark Age'

7/10

It has been more than a decade since MGMT released their smash-hit debut album 'Oracular Spectacular', which gained them worldwide praise and acclaim. And since then, the duo have looked to release more experimental and psychedelic records than pander to their commercial side. This has resulted in the band adopting a new identity as an off-kilter pop outfit that finally seems to have found its feet on their fourth full-length 'Little Dark Age'.

While their previous two albums, 'Congratulations' and 'MGMT', saw them trying to challenge the listener with new ideas, 'Little Dark Age' sees them far more comfortable in the direction they have built for themselves. With more attempts to rekindle some of that dancefloor energy from their debut release, this new full-length sees them as a more upbeat and jovial outfit, looking to create a warm and uplifting LP that isn't so focus on giving the listener a more abstract journey.

It seems that the pair have finally hit that perfect middle ground between experimentation and pop appeal, which is something we haven't heard from them for quite some time. 'Little Dark Age' is certainly one of their best to date, and gives great promise as they move into the second decade of their career.
