Mortal Prophets - 'Miene Liebe'

7/10

For the past year, there has hardly been an act as busy as Mortal Prophets. Not only has he been on this incredibly prolific streak, his releases always look to embark on something new and interesting, whether it be the instrumental prowess of his late 2023 LP 'GUITARWORKS', or the operatic endeavour he pursued for 'HANUSSEN: The Enigmatic Clairvoyant'. And after finding huge acclaim for his previous EP 'Brian Eno In Heaven' back in May, he returns once again with his latest offering 'Meine Liebe', a release that pays homage to German musical innovation over the last century.

From the very start, 'Meine Liebe' sets itself as an extremely retrospective listen. While it was initially inspired by the Weimar Period in Germany, a time of great depression and desperation between the two World Wars, he is also conjuring the electronic innovation of the 1970s to give the release a more progressive feel throughout. Blending these two distinctive eras in Germany's musical history gives the EP this incredibly absorbing feel that, while not German himself, allows Mortal Prophets to completely immerse himself in this aesthetic and deliver one of his more adventurous outings to date.

While he has certainly showcased some brilliantly alluring ideas here, 'Meine Liebe' feels like so much more than just his take on an interesting style. Mortal Prophets has completely enveloped this tone and texture in order to reinvent it for a modern ear, and give us one of his most compelling releases yet.
