Public Service Broadcasting - 'Every Valley'

7/10

Following on from their 2015 album 'The Race For Space', it seems that concept releases have now become the staple direction for London's Public Service Broadcasting. Much like their last full-length, which based itself around the US vs USSR space race of the 1960s, 'Every Valley' uses the collapse of the coal-mining industry in South Wales to line the tone of their third record.

Using vintage audio recordings of the events in order to deliver their message, 'Every Valley' works a little differently to a conventional concept album, meaning that rather than tell a story, there is simply a theme running through the entire release. So instead of having a record that skews in pace and tenacity as the tale unfolds, we are treated to a more succinct rhythm that helps create the tone of despair and loss that the band are trying to create.

In all, 'Every Valley' is a marvellously enjoyable release but has the odd lack of pace here and there, which can sometimes leave it a little flat in places. However the album still manages to deliver the intrigue it promises and still makes for an engaging listen.
