Runner Up - 'Departure Fever'

8/10

Earlier this year, Bristol-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Dave Huntriss introduced us to his Runner Up project, a venture that saw him bring together some of the more heightened aesthetics with the indie-rock realm. Channelling this broad and dynamic direction across a wave of highly-praised efforts in recent months, he has slowly begun to carve out a distinctive niche for himself, one that looks to push the boundaries of his style as far as possible. And after a heady initial year on the scene, culminating on his '1 Year, 1 Month' EP in October, he is seeing out his 2024 with his hotly-tipped debut album 'Departure Fever', a record that hones those progressive ideals even further.

Much like what his previous releases 'Curriculum Vitae' and 'Let's Go To London' looked to project, 'Departure Fever' introduces itself as one of his more uplifting and euphoric work yet. Doubling down on those atmospheric textures he first arrived with, this new eleven-track collection makes for a wonderfully rich and alluring listen, ever expanding on those riveting endeavours he has been exploring until now. Whether he looks to pursue a bold and anthemic intention for its opener 'Silver Medal' or something more humbled, like the emotive 'New Year Waltz', Runner Up already feels like an outfit we will be hearing a lot more about in the months to come as well.

He may still be within the infancy of his career right now, but 'Departure Fever' certainly makes for a memorable introduction to his sound so far. With its rich and progressive intent spread across every shimmering moment, we can't wait to hear where this journey will take him next.
