Sleigh Bells - 'Jessica Rabbit'

7/10

When Sleigh Bells first broke onto the scene with their incredible debut album 'Treats', we were introduced to a pair looking to cause an almighty racket in their first year. Since then, the duo have been releasing records that have some similar attributes to their debut but are ultimately more accessible and less out-of-control. But now for their fourth effort, it seems they have returned to their less conventional roots and opted for another record that is sometimes hard to get your head around.

'Jessica Rabbit' seems to have this chop-and-change dynamic to it, where you can't expect any song to stick to the same pace or rhythm all the way through. In fact, the album regularly likes to change the time signature or BPM almost at a whim, creating a jarring experience from the beginning. But once you get wise to this unconventional flow, you realise it is all part of this rebellious spirit the pair are looking to reinvent on this new full-length.

Fans of Sleigh Bells will probably still accept this new release, but if this is your first experience of the band, then you will probably not get what is going on. Essentially this is an album filled with great hooks and catchy moments, that show themselves for less than a minute before shifting violently to the next one. Admirable in an unusual way.
