Sorry - 'Twixtustwain'

7/10

After releasing their debut album '925' last year, a record that was considered by many to be one of the best of the year, it felt like we were going to see a lot less of Sorry throughout 2021. With tons of buzz and acclaim still running throughout the outfit, the need for new material was not really a high priority just yet. But knowing their effervescent intentions aren't one you can box up in a hurry, they have now looked to bridge the gap between their last album and what comes next with a new EP 'Twixtustwain', a fresh and captivating release that sees them spread their creative wings even further.

While '925' saw them introduce their distinct and driven sound to the world, 'Twixtustwain' is more about showing off some of their more interesting and unconventional ideas. Not really something you are likely to hear on heavy rotation on late night radio, the five-track release is a harsh blend of pulsing electronics and tender atmosphere that shows them in a more experimental light, even for their standards. It has this strong and untethered approach to its direction, leading us down these haunted avenues of sombre textures that seem to act more as a petri dish of concepts than something more serious from them.

In all, it feels like 'Twixtustwain' is here to act as a catalyst for their next body of work, opening themselves up to new and divisive directions that may or may not serve as a valuable learning curve. It does not gel as well as their initial full-length, but looks to surprise and intrigue as much as possible; the core of what Sorry are all about.
