Soulwax - 'Belgica OST'

8/10

While Soulwax and their DJ persona 2manydjs have always been applauded for their diversity and experimentation, they have never attempted something like this before. In providing the soundtrack to the new Felix Van Groeningen film 'Belgica', the pair have made themselves into sixteen different bands, each with their own name and musical style. The result is an immensely eclectic journey through the minds of their own musical artistry.

From the club-ready techno beats of Kursat 9000 to the punk thrashing of Burning Phlegm, each group on the soundtrack seems to come with their own tale of who they are and what they do. This attention to detail really gives you an idea of what Soulwax actually had to work on to bring themselves to live and thus creates a better understanding of their mindset as a whole. And while simply writing a different style of music may not seem like much of a challenge, each of these groups has an almost unidentifiable sound from one another, making it ever more impressive.

While most of the material is obviously written directly for the film, it still sends you on a brilliantly varied journey. Showing off the brilliance of a whole range of genres at once, this album has a special magic about it that is hard to compare.
