Spielbergs - 'Vestli'

8/10

Throughout the last few years, Norwegian outfit Spielbergs have stood as one of the key players in the pop-punk revival movement. While their impactful 2019 debut LP 'This Is Not The End' gave us a strong glimpse into their bold and passionate direction, it felt like the trio were resting too hard on their laurels and not honing a sound that could be defined as completely their own. But after a few years locked away with the rest of the world, they have returned to drop their sophomore studio album 'Vestli', a record that sees them broaden their horizons and deliver something far more memorable.

While their sonic appeal doesn't really break down any convention or expectation around them, 'Vestli' sees them take their formative sound and build upon its vibrant roots. Amongst this new offering, we see the band unleash some of their most energetic and engaging efforts to date with the core of this new release remaining focused on bold and fist-pumping anthems. Rarely does the record find a moment to slow down as we are treated to one blistering emo-inspired belter after another, showing that these guys are ready to take their direction and persona to the next level.

Fans of the 90s skater-punk moment will have plenty to sink their teeth into here as 'Vestli' looks to reinvent those halcyon days for a modern ear. Fast, bubbling, and always building on momentum, this lot have created a brilliantly indulgent full-length that really powers through every single hook and groove from start to finish.
