Sunn O))) - 'Kannon'

7/10

After originally being extremely prolific with studio albums during the first few years of their conception, Sunn O))) have mainly stuck to smaller and collaborative projects since their last album 'Monoliths & Dimensions'. But now arriving six years after their previous full-length, the drone metallers have returned to deliver another winding and ambient soundscape, filled with the usual unsettling atmosphere.

While 'Kannon' doesn't share the same variety as some of its predecessors, it seems like this new release is trying harder to be a far more cohesive release. With just three tracks to its name, named Kannon 1,2 & 3, the band have clearly tried to create a far more connected soundscape that combines minimalism with strong arms of high-level distortion and fuzzing guitars.

The outcome is a beautiful mess of sound, held together by its own identity. I can't say that Sunn O))) will be enjoyed by all, but for those with a keen ear for interesting sounds, it is certainly one to give a go.
