Tokyo Police Club - 'TPC'

4/10

Despite maintaining a solid following in their home country of Canada, indie-rock champions Tokyo Police Club have quietened down internationally over the last few years. Having released a flurry of singles and EPs since their last studio album 'Forcefield' back in 2014, the band have yet to reach the dizzying heights that came with their first two full-length releases since. But not ones to give up without a fight, the four-piece return with their fourth LP, simply titled 'TPC', and much like its name, this new release seems to lack much of their initial imagination and passion they once possessed.

From the start, 'TPC' doesn't really make much of an effort to make itself heard. With a lacklustre approach to production and derivative songwriting, the record moves swiftly from one track to the next without really making too much of an impact. While there is the occasional surge of interest from time to time, the majority of this release just seems to feel like the band has run low on ideas and looked to rehash the same formula of their previous records with mixed to less than average results.

It is a shame to see a once great band move into this stage of their career, but Tokyo Police Club just don't seem to have the same enthusiasm for their music as they once did. 'TPC' slips quietly into that forgettable era of disposable indie music that just doesn't have the legs to carry itself throughout.
