After a number of news outlet wrongly reported his death last night, it has now been confirmed that legendary US frontman Tom Petty has died at the age of 66.
The singer was taken to hospital on Sunday night after suffering a cardiac arrest, but was taken off life support after registering zero brain activity last night. A number of American news organisations then reported that the singer had died shortly after, despite still clinging to life after a number of hours without support.
Petty leaves behind a legacy of great work including his signature hits 'American Girl', 'Free Falling' and 'Breakdown', which he released alongside his band The Heartbreakers. You can read the full statement posted by his family below.
