Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - 'When The Lights Go'

7/10

When producer Orlando Higginbottom aka Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs released his highly-praised debut LP 'Trouble' back in 2012, it felt like the beginning of something very special. With a sound that compared to nothing at the time or since, he was heralded as the next evolution in progressive dance music. But as the years went on, it felt like that was all we were going to get as he almost completed vanished from the scene aside from the seldom DJ set. But after a full decade away, he now returns with his long-awaited sophomore studio album 'When The Light Go', a record that was certainly worth the wait.

On 'Trouble', TEED was focused around adding a fresh and distinctive aura to a bold and exciting club-ready energy, regularly splicing high-tempo beats with a rich and kaleidoscopic atmosphere. But on 'When The Lights Go', it feels like he has found himself in a more contemplative direction as this new collection looks to layer his original guise with a more matured flavour. Keeping much of the same creative textures throughout, his newest release is more about the broad and spacey tones within his work, adopting smooth and effervescent emotions to drive his new sound forward.

It may not have the same bite as his first full-length, but 'When The Lights Go' shows that he still has plenty of that adventurous flair we first loved him for, while refining his place amongst his contemporaries. Warm and alluring at every turn, his eagerly-awaited return is just as welcoming as we had hoped.
