Vast Robot Armies - 'Somewhere In The Middle'

7/10

Throughout their expansive tenure, Vast Robot Armies have never been ones to follow the rules of their kin. Although very much a part of the progressive psych-rock arena this past decade, their sound has never looked to fit into the conventional boxes of their genre, usually adopting something fresh and interesting with everything they do. And now they look to shine a light on one of their more dynamic releases 'Somewhere In The Middle', a brief EP that still manages to pack itself with plenty of innovation throughout.

Coming in at just two tracks in length, 'Somewhere In The Middle' continues that explorative nature the band have always looked to venture towards. With the riveting opener 'Dinner Music (Redeux)' offering up plenty of broad and emotive textures, not to mention some brilliantly immersive hooks from beginning to end, its other addition 'Sound Of Japan' feels a far more alluring affair as they seek to make a simple two-track EP as broad and captivating as possible.

While their output has certainly seen them deliver some truly compelling delights over the years, none have the same initial impact as 'Somewhere In The Middle'. Creating these beautifully tangible grooves, giving it a wildly unpredictable direction throughout, Vast Robot Armies make light work of their adventurous intentions once again here.
