William The Conqueror - 'Excuse Me While I Vanish'

7/10

Ever since they first emerged, Cornish trio William The Conqueror have always been ones to blend the sweeping blues-rock swagger of the Nashville sound with a distinctly British folk-inspired aesthetic. This harmonious marriage of these two genres has not only been the staple of their sound these last few years but has also allowed them to venture down new and interesting paths in the process, resulting in a wonderfully succinct and progressive direction throughout. And now they look to continue that vibrant ascent on their fourth studio album 'Excuse Me While I Vanish', a record that feels far more impactful as it plays.

Written during a period in which frontman Ruarri Joseph worked as a temporary care worker during the pandemic, 'Excuse Me While I Vanish' sees the band in a more renewed spirit, ready to bring their dynamic sound to the next level throughout. While the time in which it was conceived was a turbulent experience for everyone involved, there is this wondrous feeling of hope and levity running throughout this new collection, showcasing some of their most passionate songwriting to date and adding another refreshing layer to their always adventurous direction so far.

Switching between a warm and sombre flow alongside more flamboyant moments throughout, 'Excuse Me While I Vanish' makes for a brilliantly engaging listen. Keeping the innovation and mesmerising allure as frequent as possible, they are certainly looking to turn some heads with this one.
