Zola Jesus - 'Okovi'

8/10

After receiving some mixed reviews for her previous full-length 'Taiga' back in 2014, frontwoman Nicole Hummel aka Zola Jesus has returned to the drawing board to create something that will stand the test of time in her career, and she may just have pulled it off. 'Okovi' marks the fifth full-length release for the artist and it sounds as if she may have written one of the best albums of the year so far.

With her usual gothic disposition setting the brooding tone for this record, 'Okovi' is a masterclass of intense songwriting and diverse production. The album's lead single 'Exhumed' kickstarts the release in such an effective way, the energy of that track can be felt throughout the whole LP. It feels as if there is this momentum flowing through each song, making for a constant pace and engaged atmosphere.

It may have been a tough few years for Zola Jesus but this new release is quite exceptional. Consistent and succinct throughout, 'Okovi' is the return she deserved and everything her loyal fanbase would have hoped for.
