Roots Manuva - 'Bleeds'

6/10

Having proven to be an extremely prolific individual throughout his career, Roots Manuva returns with his ninth studio album after since 2011's '4everevolution' and from the initial listen, it seems like the veteran MC is fully back on his game.

An eclectic backdrop has always been the staple of any Roots Manuva release and 'Bleeds' is no different. While the rapper takes his own politically-charged approach within his lyrics, the production aims to be as diverse as possible, breathing a mix of atmospheric harmonies and powerful beats throughout. The record sounds exactly like a man who has held in too many ideas for so long that his aim is to bring them all to life on this new album, which at times delivers mixed results.

While it still has trouble finding its feet through a lack of cohesion, the bulk of this record is an enjoyable trip nonetheless. Roots still manages to display a versatility within his flow that is unmatched and makes his return as anthemic as possible.
