Moby & The Void Pacific Choir - 'These Systems Are Failing'

3/10

While Moby is no longer the household name he once was at the turn of the century, he has still been consistently making music and pushing the boundaries of his own work. Which could very easily sum up the sound of this collaborative album with The Void Pacific Choir. While the producer is better known for his laid-back and ethereal compositions, highlighted lately with his 'Long Ambients1' collection, this new album is fast, aggressive and completely at ends with what you would have expected from him.

Following more of an industrial style, the record is full of pounding electronic beats, shredding guitars and distorted vocals, all set at one hell of a pace. But once you get over the initial shock of hearing someone like Moby fronting a group like this, you realise that it isn't all that interesting to get into. While it no doubts has its moments, there are little too many occasions that lack the inspiration and insight to keep them interesting. Not to mention Moby's appalling David Bowie impression on 'I Wait For You'.

Basically the tracks themselves don't seem to show any variation. They start the same way they finish, and throughout that journey they just seem to go up and down in volume. It's amateurish and just not what you would expect from this legend of electronic music.
