Picture This - 'MDRN LV'

6/10

Since the release of their commercially successful self-titled debut album back in 2017, Irish pop-rock outfit Picture This have been on a whirlwind ride of worldwide tours and a growing, devout fanbase. With their distinct take on the pop-rock sound, the band have managed that rare feat of creating a mainstream appeal with critical attention layered on top. And after a couple of years away from the studio, the group now amp up the levels on their second studio album 'MDRN LV', a record that sees them take on a far more ambitious and anthemic direction in the process.

Much like other outfits in their position such as The 1975, Picture This have taken the best moments of their debut release and replicated it again and again in the hope of garnering some instant rapport on their follow-up. As a result, this means that 'MDRN LV' lacks the diversity of their debut but instead produces a cohesive and succinct collection of tracks that appeals to the lowest common denominator. Although it may come across as a simple, formula-following pop record, the group have done an exceptional job at keeping it engaging and delivered a release that never breaks the mould but still remains easy to enjoy.

It is clear that they have looked to go bigger and bolder on this new LP, but without much in the way of experimentation and creative splurges, 'MDRN LV' risks itself to become just another throw away pop record. A confident return but one that lacks that special something that will keep people coming back again and again.
